What is the process for selecting a sign?
Since each sign installation is unique there are a few questions you should think through as you consult with a dealer about purchasing a sign.
- How will the display be used? Will it broadcast simple text messages, full-color, live-feed video, or something in between? The sign’s content determines the best color range for the display and the type of sign controller that runs it.
- What are the physical characteristics of the location? Is it new or existing construction? Is your location adjacent to pedestrian traffic or vehicles traveling at residential, commercial or interstate speeds? Are there sidewalks, trees or parking lots that would block any direct-cable connections used to control the sign? Do you have access to reliable phone or cellular service? Site characteristics like these determine the type and size of the display and the electronic connections used to drive it.
- Where will the sign be positioned? LED message centers can be mounted from poles, on structures and even in corners with single-or double-sided designs.
- At what distance will the sign be viewed? LED message centers offer excellent visibility from vehicles. The speed at which the vehicles are traveling—and the distance that you want the passengers to be able to view your sign—will impact the size and pixel pitch of a message center.
- Will you control a single sign? Multiple signs from a central location? How far are they from the central sign control? While direct wired sign connections are quite common, there are other options—such as radio frequency connections—that are also available, depending on the project.
